Mominti Meets - Tessa

We chatted with Tessa ('92), mother of 2 children aged 1 and 4.

How do you experience motherhood?

I think it's the most fantastic thing I've ever done. There's nothing more rewarding than the joy on the faces of the little men. At the same time, I also think it's the hardest thing I've ever done—the worry, the management, the desire to do everything right—it can be incredibly tough combined with all the other things you feel you have to do.

Has motherhood changed you?

"Enormously! I've become better at putting things into perspective. I can leave work at the office more easily, and I no longer get so worked up about the little things. It's also made me much more emotional. The love I feel for my children and that I try to convey to them isn't given to every child. I wish that were possible."

How did you find the transition from 1 to 2 children?

Surprisingly doable; the novelty is gone, and with it, most of your insecurities. Of course, it's tough; if the baby has a bad night, you still have to be on hand for the toddler the next day. I was very afraid I wouldn't be able to love my second child as much as I loved my first. A love that strong didn't feel like something that could happen again, and yet... it did. If anything, I enjoy the second husband even more because I can soak it all in without constantly wondering what comes next.

How do you combine motherhood with things like career, sports, social expectations, etc?

Planning, planning, planning. A social network and a team spirit with your partner. I think it all comes down to being willing to do things for each other. If you're willing to give each other the world, and that includes trips outside, everyone benefits. But it can be quite a challenge sometimes, and it's not always fun.

What is your biggest dream for your children?

I hope they can live the rest of their lives carefree. When I see how much trouble young adults have finding a home, finishing their studies, or making ends meet financially, I sincerely hope my children will be spared that. That, along with good health and a good circle of friends.
